Bay Area art fans, mark your calendars! San Francisco’s Open Studios 2009 throws open studio doors citywide starting on October 10. Now in its 34th year of operation, Open Studios was founded in 1975 to provide a way for fine artists to show their work directly to the public. Now a part of ArtSpan, a nonprofit founded in 1991, SF Open Studios continues as part of a larger platform of increasing awareness of the arts within the community through education, events, and exhibitions.
Organized as a series of weekend “open house” events, 11 am-6 pm, SF Open Studios is arranged by neighborhood, so that studios located closest to each other are all open on the same weekend. (This system makes it easy for attendees to visit multiple locations in a single day.) Weekend 1 is October 10-11, and the event continues through the month, ending with Weekend 4, on October 31-November 1. Grab a copy of the Open Studios Guide magazine, available at galleries and cafes around the Bay Area, for information, maps, and locations of the featured artists. Or, if you know the name of the artist you’re searching for, check out the online version.
The festivities kick off this weekend at a private preview gala at SOMArts Gallery on Saturday, October 3. Tickets can be purchased online at privatepreviewgala2009.eventbrite.com or by phone at (415) 861-9838. The official Exhibition Opening Reception takes place on Sunday, October 4, also at SOMArts, with over 400 artworks by participating artists on display.
The actual Open Studios event begins the following week, with artists in the city’s central neighborhoods of the Mission, Castro, Duboce, Eureka Valley, Glen Park, Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, and Portola. San Francisco painter Timothy Stroth is one of the artists that will be showing his work on Weekend 1, with new canvases of his bright graphic artwork – as pictured above – on display, and fine art prints of his paintings on sale (not to mention wine, cheese, bread, and chocolate nibbles for guests).
