SF Open Studios 2009 & Monica Denevan
SF Open Studios still has another two weeks to go – this coming weekend, and Halloween weekend, October 31-November 1. For the final weekend of the event, artists from the Hunters Point Shipyard area of the city open their doors to art-loving visitors from 11 am to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday. Included in this last round is photographer Monica Denevan, whose work has been exhibited everywhere from Hong Kong to Cambodia, and Glasgow to West Hollywood.
A graduate of San Francisco State University, Denevan specializes in poetic black-and-white images that have gained her international acclaim and awards. She found special inspiration during her travels in Burma/Myanmar, and a connection to both the people and landscape.
“I hope to transcend the depiction of individual lives, by acknowledging their participation in a grander existence” she explains in her artist’s statement. “A world of extraordinary resonance and harmony, humming within lives most ordinary.”
This season, Denevan is showing new work a little closer to home than Southeast Asia, with photographs of ballet dancers. Featuring Quinn Wharton and Ashley Muangmaithong of the San Francisco Ballet, Denevan’s fluid portraits perfectly capture the dancers’ grace and beauty of motion.
